Remote Ensemble Experimental

One work, recorded together from different cities.

A composer and performers who live far apart record one work together, without having to play at the same time. Each performer records their own part at home, against one shared reference. The Agora’s production team puts the parts together, mixes and masters the recording, and everyone approves it before it is published.

Remote Ensemble is experimental. We are running it with a few projects, one at a time, to learn how it works best, so things may still change. During this experimental period, taking part, mixing and mastering are free.

  1. 1

A work. A composer or a performer proposes a work. The editors open it as a project, with its parts.

  2. 2

A part. Performers apply for a part. Each part says whether it is paid or unpaid, and a whole project can be unpaid: everyone takes part without pay. Payment and terms are agreed between the people involved; the site is not a party.

  3. 3

At home. Each performer records their part against the shared reference. The page checks the WAV file on the performer’s own computer, without uploading it, and the performer sends a link to it (WeTransfer, Google Drive, Dropbox…). No recording is stored on the site.

  4. 4

Together. The Agora’s production team lines up the parts, mixes and masters them. The composer listens and leaves notes with the minute and second.

  5. 5

Published. When everyone has approved the final recording and their credit, it is published here and on the members’ profiles. It goes on the Agora’s YouTube channel, Facebook and Instagram only where everyone has said yes.
